Orphans, Starring Alec Baldwin and Ben Foster, Shifts Broadway Start Date

After all its recasting drama, looks like the upcoming Broadway production of Orphans needs a bit more time to get things rolling. Starring Tony nominee Alec Baldwin, Ben Foster and Tom Sturridge, the play has rescheduled its first preview for March 26 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Opening night will now take place on April 18, instead of April 7 as previously planned.

Directed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan, Orphans is the story of two orphaned brothers living in a decrepit North Philadelphia row house. Treat (Foster), the eldest, supports his damaged younger sibling by petty thievery, and makes the house a virtual prison for the seemingly simple-minded Phillip (Sturridge). One night Treat kidnaps a rich older man, Harold (Baldwin), who turns out to have his own motives and becomes the father figure for which the boys have always yearned.

Transformers star Shia LaBeouf, who was set to make his Broadway debut in Orphans, exited the production a week into rehearsals due to "creative differences" with Sullivan and Baldwin. Following his departure, LaBeouf made headlines by tweeting personal e-mails from the show's cast and crew.
